Seed to Structure: The Deep Roots of Building with Hemp

You can’t secure your future without first knowing your past. As we push hemp-lime into building codes and onto job sites across the country, it’s worth remembering that we’re not inventing something from nothing. We’re the latest hands on a very old idea. What follows is where that idea actually shows up in the historical record, what the evidence really says, and how to talk about it without handing critics an easy target. Because let’s be honest with each other: no matter how careful we are, some people are going to argue. So, let’s arm our members with the truth, sourced and squared away.


Let me start with a distinction that matters, because getting it right is what separates us from the hype. Modern hempcrete, the hurd-and-lime material we cast around timber frames today, is a modern invention. What’s ancient is the underlying principle: binding hemp into a lime or clay matrix to make a wall system that’s stronger, lighter, breathable, and remarkably durable. When someone says “hempcrete is thousands of years old,” that’s not quite right. But when they say, “people have been fortifying binders with hemp for roughly 1,500 years,” that’s exactly right, and it’s a claim we can defend all day.


India: the case that can’t be waved away        

The strongest evidence we’ve got sits in the Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, India, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2016, archaeological chemist Rajdeo Singh of the Archaeological Survey of India and botanist M. M. Sardesai published a peer-reviewed study in the journal Current Science. They took plaster from the sixth-century Buddhist Cave 12 and, using a scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and stereomicroscopy, positively identified Cannabis sativa in the clay plaster; in interviews accompanying the study, Singh put the hemp content at roughly ten percent.


This is the example to lead with, every time, because it isn’t folklore. It’s laboratory identification of hemp in a dated, protected structure, published in a scientific journal. The study concluded that hemp helped regulate humidity and resist pests; subsequent review literature contrasts Ellora with the nearby Ajanta Caves, begun around the second century BCE and completed in the fifth century CE, where no cannabis fiber has been reported and insects and related biological decay have claimed roughly a quarter of the paintings. Fifteen centuries later, the Ellora plaster and its paintings are still intact. And that’s the durability argument we make about our own walls, written in stone by people who figured it out within a century of the fall of Rome.

France: the story everyone tells, told honestly

The most-repeated claim in our world is European: hemp mortar discovered in the abutments of Merovingian bridges in France, built in the sixth century, and still standing. It even has a named example, a stone bridge on the Sarthe River at Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei (Orne, Normandy), dated to around 500 AD, with a mortar reported at more than ten percent hemp.

Here’s where I’ll be straight with you, because our credibility depends on it. This claim shows up widely — the European Commission’s CORDIS reports hemp mortar in sixth-century Merovingian bridge abutments, and Gołębiewski’s review of hemp-lime architecture names the Sarthe bridge at Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei — but both trace back to secondary sources rather than to a single primary archaeological analysis the way the Ellora study does. So, we should present it as a strong and long-standing tradition in literature, not as a settled lab result. Say it with confidence, name the bridge, and let the honesty about the sourcing be part of your strength. When a critic pushes, you’ve already conceded the fair point and kept the larger truth.

 

The threads most people miss

Two more are worth knowing. In China, the European Commission’s CORDIS reports that around 200 BCE hemp was mixed with lime and tung oil and used as caulk for wooden sailing vessels — a moisture-managing composite, though the claim rests on secondary sources. And in Japan, the Nakamura family house of 1698 in Miasa (Omachi City, Nagano) still stands as a designated Important Cultural Property, open to the public alongside the village’s Asa no Yakata hemp museum. Across continents and across a thousand years, the same instinct keeps reappearing: reach for the hemp plant when you need a material that lasts. Then, for a long stretch, the thread goes quiet.

1980s France: the rebirth

The material we know today wasn’t handed down in an unbroken line. It was rediscovered. In the 1980s, French builders restoring medieval timber-frame houses needed something better than the crumbling wattle-and-daub infill they kept tearing out. In 1986 a builder named Charles Rasetti, restoring the Maison de la Turque, a sixteenth-century timber-framed house at Nogent-sur-Seine, worked out a mix of hemp hurds and lime that could fill those voids while letting the old walls breathe. By 1989, the first structure using hempcrete wrapped around a timber frame had been built in France. Within a few years the idea had spread and diversified, and France, where industrial hemp cultivation was never banned outright, became the heart of the modern hemp-building movement.


That’s the real birthday of the material in our mixers. Not the sixth century, the 1980s. And there’s no shame in that. The ancients gave us the principle, and our recent predecessors gave us the recipe.


From revival to recognition

The story since then is one of steady legitimization, and this is where our own work as an association enters the historical record. In 2022, hemp-lime construction won approval for the U.S. model residential code — recommended at the ICC Public Comment Hearings in September and confirmed by the Online Governmental Consensus Vote that closed on November 1, 2022 — and was published as Appendix BL, Hemp-Lime (Hempcrete) Construction, in the 2024 International Residential Code, which jurisdictions may adopt at their option. That’s the bridge between the ancient root and the codified future: a material with some fifteen centuries of demonstrated performance finally earning its place in the American rulebook. Every permit pulled, every inspector educated, and every appendix adopted is us adding our own chapter to a very long book.


How to talk about our history without getting burned

Because people are going to argue, here’s the members’ field guide. Claim these with full confidence: hemp’s been used to fortify lime and clay binders for roughly 1,500 years; the Ellora Caves are a peer-reviewed, laboratory-confirmed example that the study dates to the sixth century AD (some art historians date Cave 12 a century or two later, which is worth conceding up front); and modern hempcrete as we know it was developed in France in the 1980s.


Present this one as well-attested tradition, with the honest caveat: the sixth-century French Merovingian bridge mortar, which is real in the literature and tied to a named structure, but rests on thinner primary evidence than Ellora.

And avoid these, because they hand critics a win: that “hempcrete” identical to ours is thousands of years old; guaranteed lifespan numbers stated as fact; and any claim you can’t source. We don’t need to exaggerate, because the truth is already remarkable.


Why this matters

We’re not romantics selling nostalgia. We’re builders and engineers carrying forward a proven idea into a market that needs it, an idea that predates Portland cement by more than a millennium and outlasts it in breathability, carbon, and health. Knowing that past isn’t a history lesson. It’s our license to speak with authority about the future.

Seed to structure. That’s not a slogan, it’s a lineage. And it runs a lot deeper than most people know.
